FC Barcelona are fearing that defender Gerard Pique might not be available for selection for the remainder of the season.
The Spaniard suffered a knee injury in Barcelona‘s defeat to Atletico Madrid on Saturday night with the player moving to tears after being forced off the field at the Wanda Metropolitano.
The 33-year-old had a collision with Angel Correa and Spanish portal Sports reports that Pique could be facing a six-month lay-off. Correa fell with his full weight onto Pique’s outstretched leg forcing it to bend in an awkward direction.
The injury adds to Ronald Koeman woes with the Dutch tactician already without the services of Ansu Fati and Samuel Umtiti with Sergi Roberto also hobbling off in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat.
Barcelona in a statement said: “Gerard Piqué has a sprained right knee. The Barça centre back is waiting for more tests to ascertain the extent of the injury after a collision with Atlético striker Correa forced him off the field of play on the hour mark.
“Sergi Roberto has an injury to his right thing and is waiting for more tests to ascertain the extent of the injury. The versatile Catalan picked up the injury towards the end of the defeat in the game against Atlético.“
